Smt Kusum Azad was born on September 3, 1936, in Nahan, Himachal Pradesh. In 1961, she married K.C. Azad and subsequently focused on being a devoted homemaker, raising their three daughters with love and care. After completing her graduation from Christian College Shimla, Mrs. Azad instilled the values of compassion, selflessness, and service to humanity in her children.
The three daughters—Meenu Sharma, Kumud Sharma, and Anu Sharma—have pursued careers in law and social service, with Meenu practicing as an attorney in the USA, Kumud working as an advocate in the Punjab & Haryana High Court, and Anu focusing on advocacy and mediation. All three daughters are actively involved in the Adi Ananda Project, embracing their parents’ passion and dedication to the cause.
As the pillar of strength for her husband, Mrs. Azad provided unwavering support during the various social justice initiatives he spearheaded. She has been instrumental in fulfilling their shared dream of creating a self-sustained community for those in need, embodying the essence of Adi Ananda, which translates to “Ultimate Bliss.” This foundation represents the unconditional love and dedication of Mr. and Mrs. Azad.
Throughout their lives, the Azads have cared for their employees, their families, and local NGOs in and around Phagwara, including Pingalwara, an orphanage home in Phillaur, and a leprosy ashram. Their vision of establishing a harmonious community transcends religious, caste, and creed boundaries, fostering unity and support for those who need it most. Mrs. Azad’s motherly love and passion for helping others continue to be the driving force behind the Adi Ananda Project, as she strives to bring hope, joy, and a sense of belonging to those in need.
